Canungra last Day

Today we went up to Tambo again and it looked like another task for the last day. They set a 71km dogleg around 2 turnpoints. The wind was getting stronger, so a very difficult one. When I got into the air, I wasnt quite convinced about the quality of the day. Yes I found strong lift, but also strong turbulence and a killing head wind.

After 5 thermals I finally wanted to start flying out on course, but kind of didnt move forward at all. My Compeo reported a 50km/h head wind... hm, I radioed to Big Jon and very quickly was informed that the day had been cancelled. Great, now I just had to get to the biggest, nicest looking landing field I could find. There were already 5 guys in it, so I would get some help. Not so easy to groundhandle gliders in strong wind gusty conditions, so I was really happy when I saw that one of the pilots in the field went out to help me while I was getting closer to the ground. Believe it or not- it was Steve Moyes himself who caught me basically out of the air and made sure that me and my glider were alright!

So Jonny Durand won this comp for the 6th time in a row! Even though he was quite sick and passed around the bird flu in his team. Didnt seem to matter too much, his team mate DAve Seib came 2nd, followed by ex World Champion Ricky Duncan, 3 points behind him ex-World Champion Steve Moyes, in 5th place Attila Bertok who just won the preworlds in Big Spring, then Scottie Barrett, and I ended in 7th.

Im looking forward to the final party tonight, because these Canungra guys dont just know how to fly big tasks, but they also know how to have fun. Some of the pilots decided to make up a band and play again tonight, after their premiere at the red faces went really well.

Canungra Day 7

Today was cancelled due to the strong north wind that creates bad lee side rotors on both launches. Not my favourite anyway to punch headwind into a task, or fly along with a strong crosswind. Had plenty of that this year. However, the skies looked epic again, promising a really good year and start into Aussie flying season. A day on the Gold Coast is a nice change to the normal hangie routine though.

The forecast predicts some showers and storms for tomorrow, so the comp might be over already. I ended up 7th which is quite good, looking at the field of so many of the top 5o of the world. Yet without fixed validity it would have been a 5th place like last year, so this system doesnt quite suit me. Too bad that I have to return to Germany so soon, spring only just started here, with a very promising intro for some long flights during this Aussie season. The new Litesport 3s suited me very well in all the different weather situations that we had this weak, handling and performance of the machine were really convincing. On glides I tried to stay side by side with the "big guys" and didnt lose too much on them. Couldnt resist waving at Steve Moyes one day on a crossing when he looked back into my direction ;)

So far we had the best Canungra comp ever flying wise, and it was awesome to meet all my friends from here and fly with them again. Guns like Dave Staver, Glen McLeod and big Jon Durand, Jonnys father. Well, then legends like Steve Moyes and Rick Duncan, two ex-world champions. Hope I can make it back here next year!

Canungra Day 6

A huge, stationary stratus cloud covered the sky above take off today and forced us into a small task of 42km to Rathdowney. At 1pm the finally the sun lightened us up and we filled the air with aluminium. I flew in a small, exquisite gaggle with Steve Moyes, Adam Parer and other guns, and was leading out to find new thermals for most of the way. Well, until I hit the deck 3km before goal and saw the others gliding over my head into goal ;) But I needed a "bomb out" day for fixed validity anyhow, so that was it! Lets see how it worked out in the scores. By the way, Jonny Durand was the first in goal again and is nearly uncatchable for the other pilots now.

Today the sky is covered in clouds, nw winds, so another difficult and slow Tambo day. They predicted rain and storms for tomorrow, I guess today might be the last chance to score some points.

Canungra Day 5

Today we faced stable conditions and a northeaster, so we went back to Mt Tamborine launch. The task was set shorter according to the blue skies, a 76km flight to Lake Moogera around the Rathdowney turnpoint. There were about 12 pilots in goal, but only Jonny Durand and me of the group that always made goal so far! Now Im off for the Red FAces party, The event of every Canungra comp.

Rekordwettbewerb – Record competition Canungra Day 4

Today Jonny wanted to set a 300km task, but we could stop him and scale it down to a 204km dogleg passing Killarney as a turnpoint. The poor guys who landed there are still not back... I was luckier and landed with more than 20 other pilots in goal. High cloudbase and a slight tail wind let created perfect conditions for another scenic flight through mountains and far into the flatlands of Queensland. Tomorrow we might have lighter winds which means we will probably fly an out and return, since its going to be the Red Faces night party where the teams put on a funny show and completely embarrass themselves ;) Attila won yesterday, and Jonny Durand today`s task.

Canungra Day 3

Just a brief message, since we got back really late last night. An epic day! We crossed the Great Dividing Range, my first time across Cunninghams Gap, and flew nearly 200km into goal. With me there were another 18 happy and tired pilots in goal. Today we also have a south easter, so another promising day for a really long flight.

Canungra Day 2

Today we went to Beechmont, since the wind has swung around to the southeast. It was blown out, so the day was cancelled. Good for me, a day to rest, to cook nice food and to get some sleep. It got quite late last night, since we tried to get to one pilot for ages. It was pouring with rain, so he hid in a hollow tree!

From tomorrow on the forecast is great, we might get up to 7 rounds altogether. We are flying with fixed validity again, so the worst 20% of each pilot are deducted in the end of the comp, trying to encourage fast racing and to avoid gaggle flying.

I got one of the beautiful Durand Mugs for having made goal yesterday. A good reason to make goal again or place well- the top 10 pilots will get one of those great mugs, handmade in Jonnys pottery and decorated with hanggliders.

Canungra Day 1

Today we flew our first task, even though it was still raining when we got to launch. After a while it cleared up a little, but I still didnt expect to fly. I set up anyway, and the task was a direct flight to Boonah. 45km doesnt sound like much, but under a cloud covered sky with low base and weak thermals it takes a while. Especially grovelling low above tiger country.

Most of the time I flew with Scott Barrett. Not fast, just in survival mode. Below us we saw gliders every few kilometers. I never thought we would fly today, let alone getting to goal. But the first day on my Litespeed 3 was a success – I was the first to cross the goal line! First time in such a high profile international competition! I mean, even Attila Bertok is here, winner of the pre-worlds. Scott, Jonny Durand and Ricky Duncan also made goal, and Jonny will have won the day, because he took a later startgate than me and flew a few minutes faster.

After finishing packup it got very unpleasant in goal. Heavy rain all the way back to headquarter cooling down the air significantly. Lucky I was well equipped with warm Icebreaker shirts. Sometimes it can get cold even in Queensland.
##
At the moment there are still some showers, creating big puddles. Lets see how the comp procedes tomorrow.

In Canungra

Vicki took me to the Qantas terminal at Sydney airport for my flight to Coolangatta, when they had an evacuation for a breach of security. Optimistically I checked in anyway and cued up in the kilometers of passengers. While I was waiting, Stuie called and told me that Scotts car had broken down, so my ride to Canungra would be a bit later. No problem, so was my flight up to the Gold Coast.

We arrived in Canungra at 1.30 am and didnt get much sleep that night. I had a good rest yesterday though, and it looks as if we might start with a rest day into the comp, as we are covered by clouds and the predictions are for showers and storms this afternoon and for tomorrow as well.

People dont mind too much I guess, since it is Indy weekend and pilots are keen to go and see the cars racing. And looks like the weather might become really nice for the rest of the week, with a southeaster taking us to Beechmont launch.

Time for me to get accustomed to my new glider, the Litespeed 3.

This time Im staying with Sue, Tim, Finn und Drew. On the photo Drew in the microwave ;)

In Sydney

After a brief stop in Christchurch at Tish´s and Cris´s place, Im now in Sydney at the Moyes Headquarter. Vicki picked me up in the airport yesterday, and this morning at 5.45 am I joined Bill ritual swimming in the Bronte rock pool. Would have been about 17 degrees celcius, but a lot of people were already up training! Tonight I will head on to Coolangatta where Scott and Monica will pick me up and take me over to Canungra.

I added a few NZ photos. And sheep for Mark!

Das nächste Flugabenteuer/The next flying adventure

Now Im above Vegas on my flight to L.A., trying to get to Auckland today. After a quick visit I will fly to Coolangatta and compete in the Canungra Cup from the 20th-28th of October. I will get a Litespeed 3s, tested by Jonny Durand on his 300km flight a few days ago. Must be a machine! Weather seems to be really brilliant this year, dry and hot. Big names like Steve Moyes, Ricky Duncan, Attila Bertok and Jonny Durand are on the pilot list. It will be a great comp with a lot of fun too.
